Favorite Books From our Members

The Linguistics, Neurology, and Politics of Phonics: Silent "E" Speaks Out, by Steven Strauss.

don't think of an elephant! Know Your Values and Frame the Debate by George Lakoff. Lakoff outlines in detail traditional American values that progressives hold, but often are unable to articulate. He discusses the ways conservatives have framed issues, and provides examples of how progressives can reframe the debate.

At a Loss for Words: How America is Failing our Children and What We Can Do about It by Betty Bardige. (2005, Temple University Press, ISBN 1-59213-393-2). This compelling book looks at young children's emotional development and their language learning and vocabulary building and how it affects later learning in school. Bardige argues the gap in academic achievement actually begins in the toddler years when children do not receive enough emotional support and vocabulary development, either at home, from their caregivers, or both. She also addresses the needs of English Language Learners and ways to assist them in being successful.
